The Department of Common Courses at Ankara Social Sciences University is responsible for coordinating the common and elective courses offered across the university. Its primary responsibilities include organizing the curricula of Turkish Language, Atatürk’s Principles and the History of the Turkish Revolution, World History, Elective Academic Turkish, and compulsory/elective second foreign language courses, as well as assigning instructors to these courses.
At our university, the courses in Turkish Language, Atatürk’s Principles and the History of the Turkish Revolution, and World History are designed with a student-centered approach aimed at developing students’ research, analytical, and critical thinking skills. In line with these objectives, the Department seeks to teach language, history, and literature courses through innovative perspectives and methods, while equipping students with the ability to think critically and express their ideas effectively both orally and in writing. In our language courses, we also aim to enhance students’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in the target language by employing modern technologies and teaching methods. Furthermore, through language education, we seek to increase students’ social and cultural awareness.
Our students have the opportunity to develop their language skills through curricula prepared in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in courses offered in German, Arabic, Chinese, Persian, French, Spanish, English, Italian, Japanese, and Russian. In the second foreign language courses, students are offered language education that can extend for up to eight semesters within their undergraduate programs. The content of courses coded 101 and 102 corresponds to the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; courses coded 201 and 202 correspond to the A2 level; and courses coded 301, 302, 401, and 402 correspond to the B1 level. In addition, our students have access to a well-equipped language library containing a rich collection of resources in various languages.
